Signs of a main line or sewer problem

A single clogged sink is a drain problem. These signs usually point further down the line.

  • Several fixtures backing up

When the tub fills as the toilet flushes, or two bathrooms clog together, the blockage is past the branch lines.

  • Gurgling when water runs

Toilets that gurgle while a sink or washer drains are pushing air through a line that can't carry the flow.

  • Odors at drains or cleanouts

Sewer smells near floor drains or the cleanout cap can mean waste is sitting in the line instead of moving out.

  • Water coming up low

Water rising in a basement floor drain or lower shower is often the first place a main line backup shows.

  • The same clog keeps returning

A line that needs clearing again every few weeks usually has roots, scale or a pipe defect that snaking alone won't fix.

  • Wet spots along the line

Standing water or soggy ground between the house and the street or cesspool can mean a cracked or separated pipe.

How JET finds and clears the problem

The right fix depends on where the blockage is and what caused it, so the first job is figuring out which part of the system is involved.

One drain or the main line?

Branch lines carry water from each sink, tub and toilet to the main line, which leaves the house and runs to the street sewer, a septic tank or a cesspool. A clog in a branch line affects one fixture. A clog in the main line affects everything downstream of it, which is why the lowest drains in the house usually back up first.

If only one fixture is slow, start with drain service. If several are acting up together, the main line or the sewer line is the likely cause.

Seeing inside the pipe

When a line clogs repeatedly or the cause isn’t obvious, a sewer camera inspection shows what’s inside: roots, grease, scale, sags, cracks or a collapsed section. It also tells the technician whether the pipe can safely take high-pressure jetting.

Snaking or jetting

A drain snake cuts through a blockage and opens the line quickly, which suits most household clogs; see drain cleaning. Hydro jetting scours the full width of the pipe with pressurized water, which is the better tool for grease, scale and root regrowth. For the building sewer, sewer jetting cleans the line from the house to the street or the cesspool.

Lines that end at a cesspool

On Long Island, many main lines end at a cesspool or septic tank instead of a street sewer. When those drains back up, the cause can be the line or a full system, and the treatment is different. Because JET also pumps and services cesspools, one visit can check both sides of the problem.

Repairs, emergencies and winter freezes

Damaged pipe calls for blocked sewer line repair. Sewage coming into the house is an emergency sewer service call, any hour. And in cold snaps, lines in unheated spaces can freeze; see frozen pipe repairs.

Sewer & drain questions

Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.

What's the difference between a drain and a sewer line?

Drains are the branch lines from each fixture. The sewer, or main line, collects them all and carries everything out of the house to the street sewer, septic tank or cesspool.

Do you offer emergency sewer service?

Yes. JET answers 24/7 for main line backups, sewage in the house and other urgent drain problems.

Is hydro jetting safe for my pipes?

It's safe for pipe in good condition. If a line may be cracked or collapsed, a camera inspection comes first so the right method is used.

Do you handle commercial drains?

Yes. JET clears and maintains drains, main lines and grease lines for restaurants, offices and other commercial properties.

Can you tell if the problem is the line or my cesspool?

Usually, yes. The technician checks the cleanout and the system so you know whether the line needs clearing, the system needs pumping, or both.
