Blocked sewer line repair on Long Island

A blocked main sewer line stops wastewater from leaving the building, so drains back up everywhere at once. JET finds the blockage, clears it and repairs the pipe when damage is the cause. Available 24/7 for homes and businesses.

Signs your main sewer line is blocked

These symptoms point past a single clogged drain to the pipe that serves the whole building.

  • Floor drain overflowing

The lowest opening in the building is where a blocked main line shows up first, often in a basement floor drain or shower.

  • Toilet rises with laundry

If water climbs in a toilet or tub when the washing machine drains, the shared line below them is not carrying the water away.

  • Every fixture backing up

Sinks, tubs and toilets on different sides of the house failing together almost always means the blockage is in the main line.

  • Backups after cleaning

A line that clogs again soon after it was snaked usually has roots, a sag or a broken section that cleaning alone will not fix.

How JET repairs a blocked sewer line

The goal is a line that stays open, not one that drains for a week. That starts with knowing why it blocked.

Blocked drain or blocked sewer line?

A clogged sink or tub is a branch-line problem, and drain service usually takes care of it. A blocked sewer line is different: it sits downstream of every fixture, so the whole building loses drainage and sewage can come back up through the lowest opening.

Until the line is cleared, use as little water as possible. Each flush or shower adds to what is already backing up.

What causes main line blockages

  • Tree roots enter through cracked or loose joints and catch everything that passes.
  • Grease and sludge build up on pipe walls until the opening is too narrow to flow.
  • Sagging or shifted pipe holds water and debris in a low spot.
  • Collapsed sections in older pipe, including clay and cast iron, close off the line.
  • Wipes and other items that should not be flushed lodge in the line.

Each cause calls for a different fix, which is why the cause matters before the repair.

Finding the blockage

When a line keeps blocking or the cause is unclear, a sewer camera inspection shows what is inside the pipe and roughly where it is. That separates a clog that can be cleared from a pipe that is broken, and it keeps any digging limited to the section that needs it.

Clearing and repairing the line

Most blockages are cleared first, with a cable machine or with high-pressure sewer jetting for roots, grease and heavy buildup. Clearing restores flow and lets the condition of the pipe be checked.

If the inspection shows a crack, separation or collapse, JET explains the repair options for that section before any work starts. After repairs, the line is flow tested to confirm it drains properly.

Homes and commercial properties

Older homes with clay or cast-iron pipe and properties with large trees near the line tend to see blockages more often. On commercial properties such as restaurants, apartment buildings and offices, one blocked line can shut down every unit or restroom it serves.

For businesses with grease-heavy waste, see commercial services and grease trap cleaning.

Blocked sewer line FAQs

Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.

Can a blocked sewer line clear on its own?

Rarely. Water may slowly seep past a partial blockage, but the material causing it stays in the pipe and usually gets worse.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner on a main line clog?

No. Store-bought chemicals are not designed for a main line blockage, rarely reach it, and leave caustic water standing in the pipes for whoever clears the line.

How do you know whether the pipe is damaged?

A camera inspection shows the inside of the line, including roots, cracks, sags and collapsed sections, so the repair can be based on what is actually there.

Do roots mean the sewer line must be replaced?

Not always. Roots can often be cleared with cutting or jetting. If they keep returning through a broken section, repairing that section may be the longer-term fix.

Can you fix a blocked line in the middle of the night?

Yes. JET takes calls 24/7 for blocked sewer lines that are backing up into a home or business.
