Signs you need clogged drain service

A plunger and a kettle of hot water fix some clogs. Call when the problem comes back, spreads to other fixtures or starts to overflow.

  • Sink won't drain

Kitchen and bathroom sinks that hold water for minutes, or refill the other basin, usually have a buildup of grease, food, soap or hair further down the pipe.

  • Standing water in showers

Ankle-deep water in a tub or shower points to hair and soap scum packed into the trap or the branch line behind the wall.

  • Toilet backs up

A toilet that rises toward the rim when flushed, or gurgles when another fixture drains, needs attention before it overflows.

  • Floor drain overflowing

Water coming up through a basement or laundry floor drain often means the blockage is downstream of several fixtures.

  • The same clog returns

If you are clearing the same drain every few weeks, something in the line is catching debris and it needs a proper cleaning.

  • Odors from drains

A sour or sewage smell rising from a drain can come from trapped waste in the pipe or a problem further along the system.

How JET handles a clogged drain

Every clogged drain call starts with one question: is the blockage in this one fixture, or somewhere that affects the whole building? The answer decides how the clog is cleared.

One clogged drain or the whole house?

If only one sink, tub or shower is slow, the clog is almost always in that fixture’s trap or the short branch pipe that serves it. That is usually a quick fix.

When two or more fixtures back up together, for example a toilet that bubbles while the washing machine drains, the blockage is more likely in the main line that carries everything out of the building. That calls for sewer and main line service rather than work on a single drain.

Kitchen, bathroom and laundry clogs

Different rooms clog for different reasons. Kitchen drains collect grease, food scraps and coffee grounds. Bathroom sinks, tubs and showers gather hair, soap scum and toothpaste. Laundry and utility drains pick up lint and grit.

Knowing what is likely in the pipe helps the technician choose the right tool the first time, whether that’s a hand auger for a bathroom sink or a heavier machine for a kitchen line.

Floor drains and basement backups

Floor drains sit at the lowest point of the plumbing, so they are often the first place water appears when a line downstream is blocked. A floor drain that overflows when you run the washer or shower is a warning worth taking seriously.

If water or sewage is already on the floor, call JET right away at (631) 260-3640. We take clogged drain calls 24/7.

Clearing the clog the right way

Most clogged drains are cleared with a drain snake, also called an auger, fed through the fixture or a cleanout. You can read how that works on our drain cleaning page.

Grease, scale or roots that keep coming back may need high-pressure water instead. Our hydro jet drain cleaning page explains when jetting is a good fit, and a sewer line camera inspection can show what is inside a line before deciding.

Clogged drains on cesspool and septic properties

According to Suffolk County, close to 70% of homes in the county rely on a cesspool or septic system. On those properties, slow drains throughout the house can mean the system itself is full rather than a pipe being clogged.

JET services cesspools and septic systems as well as drains, so we can check both. If the system needs attention, see cesspool and septic pumping.

Why we don't use chemical drain cleaners

Store-bought chemical drain openers can loosen a small clog for a while, but the U.S. EPA advises against them for homes on septic systems and recommends boiling water or a drain snake instead.

Mechanical clearing removes the blockage without adding harsh chemicals to your pipes or your cesspool.

Water line repair and drain installation

Not every drain problem is a clog. JET also repairs leaking or broken water lines and installs new drain lines, whether a section of pipe has failed, a fixture is being added, or a commercial space needs new drains.

We find the damaged section, explain what needs replacing, and do the work so the line is sound before anything is closed up.

Clogged drain service FAQs

Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.

What kinds of clogged drains does JET clear?

Kitchen and bathroom sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, laundry and utility drains, floor drains and main lines, for homes and commercial properties.

Is a clogged drain an emergency?

It is when water or sewage is overflowing, or when every drain in the building has stopped. JET answers clogged drain calls 24/7 at (631) 260-3640.

Why are several of my drains clogged at once?

Multiple slow or backed-up fixtures usually point to a blockage in the main line or, on cesspool and septic properties, a system that needs pumping.

Should I pour drain cleaner in first?

We don't recommend it. The EPA advises against chemical drain openers for homes with septic systems, and leftover chemicals in the pipe can make the job less safe for whoever clears it.

Can you tell me why my drain keeps clogging?

Often, yes. The technician can explain what came out of the line, and a camera inspection can be added when the cause isn't clear.
