Clogged toilet repair on Long Island
A toilet that won't flush, keeps clogging or is about to overflow needs help fast. JET clears toilet clogs in the bowl, trap and drain line for Long Island homes and businesses, 24/7.
When to call about a clogged toilet
If a few plunges don't do it, stop before the bowl overflows and call.
Bowl fills, won't drain
Water rising toward the rim after a flush means the trap or drain is blocked. Don't flush again.
Weak or slow flush
A flush that swirls but barely empties the bowl often points to a partial clog in the toilet's built-in trap.
Clogs every few days
A toilet that needs the plunger again and again may have an object lodged in the trap or buildup in the line.
Gurgles when others drain
Bubbling in the bowl when a sink or tub drains suggests the problem is past the toilet, in the shared line.
Something was flushed
Toys, wipes, paper towels and similar items can wedge in the trap and won't break down on their own.
How JET clears a clogged toilet
The fix depends on where the clog is: in the toilet itself, in the drain right behind it, or further along the line.

Clogs in the toilet's trap
Every toilet has a curved trap built into the porcelain, and that bend is where most toilet clogs form. Excess paper, wipes and dropped objects tend to stop there.
Clearing it calls for a toilet auger, sometimes called a closet auger. It has a short cable inside a bent guide tube with a protective sleeve, so it can reach the trap without scratching the bowl.
When the clog is past the toilet
If the auger clears the trap but the toilet still backs up, the blockage is in the drain line beyond it. In some cases the toilet is lifted off its flange so the line can be cleaned directly, and a new wax ring is set when it goes back.
If other fixtures are also slow, the main line may be involved. Our clogged drain service and sewer service pages explain the difference.
Overflowing toilet: what to do first
If the bowl is about to overflow, take the lid off the tank and push the flapper down to stop more water coming in. Then turn the shutoff valve behind the toilet clockwise to close it.
Don’t flush again to test it. Call JET at (631) 260-3640 and we’ll take it from there, 24/7.
Toilets on cesspool and septic systems
If every toilet in the house is slow, or a toilet backs up when you run the washer, the cesspool or septic system may be full rather than the toilet being clogged.
JET services cesspools and septic systems too, so we can check the system on the same visit. See cesspool and septic pumping, or emergency septic pumping if sewage is coming up.
What not to flush
The EPA’s rule of thumb is simple: flush only human waste and toilet paper. That rule protects both your pipes and your cesspool or septic system.
Baby wipes and other wet wipes, paper towels, feminine products, dental floss and cat litter all belong in the trash. Skip chemical drain openers too; for septic homes the EPA points to a snake as the better option.

Clogged toilet repair FAQs
Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.
Why does my toilet keep clogging?
Common causes are too much paper at once, wipes or objects stuck in the trap, buildup in the drain line or, on cesspool and septic homes, a system that is full.
Are 'flushable' wipes safe to flush?
We recommend putting all wipes in the trash. The EPA advises flushing only human waste and toilet paper.
Should I use drain cleaner in a clogged toilet?
No. The EPA recommends against chemical drain openers for septic homes, and the chemicals can splash back when the toilet is plunged or augered.
Can a clogged toilet mean my cesspool is full?
It can, especially if several toilets and drains are slow at once. JET can check the drain line and the system.
Do you handle toilet overflows at night?
Yes. JET answers 24/7 at (631) 260-3640 for overflowing or backed-up toilets.
