Signs the main sewer line needs jetting

A main line problem shows up in more than one place, because every fixture drains into the same pipe.

  • Toilets gurgle together

A toilet that bubbles when the tub or washing machine drains is a classic sign of a restricted main line.

  • Backup at the lowest drain

Sewage rising in a basement floor drain or a ground-floor shower shows water can't get out of the building.

  • Several drains slow at once

When sinks, tubs and toilets all slow down together, the shared pipe is the likely cause.

  • Repeat main line clogs

If the main line has been snaked before and clogs again, buildup is probably still lining the pipe.

  • Sewer smell at the cleanout

Odors around the outdoor or basement cleanout can mean waste is sitting in the line instead of flowing out.

What sewer jetting involves

Sewer jetting is hydro jetting applied to the building sewer: the larger pipe that carries all of a property's wastewater away.

The pipe we're cleaning

Every fixture in a building drains into one main line, called the building sewer. On sewered properties it runs to the public sewer connection. On cesspool and septic properties it runs to the cesspool or septic tank in the yard.

Because it carries everything, a restriction in this pipe affects the whole house, not just one sink. Single-fixture clogs are covered on our clogged drain service page.

How JET jets a main line

The jetter hose goes in through a cleanout, an access fitting on the main line. Water at high pressure drives the nozzle along the pipe while the jets break up the blockage and scour grease, sludge and fine roots from the walls.

The loosened material is flushed downstream as the hose is pulled back. Then the line is tested with water to confirm it drains freely. The same method on smaller interior pipes is explained on our hydro jet drain cleaning page.

Inspect before you jet

Main sewer lines on older properties may be clay or cast iron, and a cracked, offset or collapsed section can be made worse by high pressure. When a line has repeat problems or its condition is unknown, a sewer line camera inspection shows whether jetting is safe.

If the camera finds a break or collapse, the line needs blocked sewer line repair rather than cleaning.

When the cesspool is the real problem

On a cesspool or septic property, a full system looks a lot like a clogged main line: drains slow down and the lowest fixtures back up. Jetting the pipe won’t help if the cesspool has no room left.

JET services both, so the technician can check the level in the system as well as the line. If the system is full or overflowing, see pumping or emergency septic pumping.

Homes and commercial buildings

Restaurants, apartment buildings and offices push more water and grease through their main lines than a typical house, so their lines tend to build up faster. Jetting on a schedule can keep them from backing up during business hours.

For larger properties, see our commercial services. Our sewer service page covers the full range of main line work.

Sewer jetting FAQs

Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.

What's the difference between sewer jetting and hydro jet drain cleaning?

Both use high-pressure water. Sewer jetting cleans the main building sewer that carries all the wastewater out. Hydro jet drain cleaning focuses on the smaller drain lines inside the building.

How do I know it's the main line and not one drain?

If more than one fixture is slow or backing up, especially the lowest drains in the building, the main line is the likely cause.

Can sewer jetting clear tree roots?

It can cut back fine roots with the right nozzle. Heavy root masses or a pipe broken by roots may need mechanical cutting or repair, so a camera inspection is often the next step.

Will jetting fix a backup if I have a cesspool?

Only if the line is the problem. If the cesspool is full, it needs pumping. JET can check both the line and the system.

Do you offer emergency sewer jetting?

Yes. If sewage is backing up into the building, call JET at (631) 260-3640. We answer 24/7.
