Why Southold homes depend on cesspools
As a 2019 Suffolk Times guest column put it, except for the Village of Greenport, the Town of Southold does not have sewers. Suffolk County’s 2012 sewered-areas map for the town agrees: it shows only the Greenport Sewer District and the federal plant on Plum Island, and no public sewer district serves Southold hamlet. Most homes in Southold aren’t on a public sewer and rely on a cesspool or septic system.
The housing is also on the older side. The typical home in Southold was built around 1971 (U.S. Census, ACS 2020–2024), and older homes often have older cesspools that need closer attention: pumping on a schedule, a check of the system whenever it’s opened, and a plan in place before a failure forces one.
Replacing a failed cesspool in Southold
