Signs your cesspool needs cleaning, not just pumping

Pumping empties the liquid. These signs point to buildup that a pump-out alone may leave behind.

  • Fills up soon after pumping

If the level climbs back quickly after a recent pump-out, the bottom and side holes may be sealed with sludge, so water has nowhere to go.

  • Odors that come back

A sewage smell that returns within weeks of service can mean heavy buildup is still sitting in the pool.

  • Slow drains everywhere

When several fixtures drain slowly at once and the house lines are clear, a clogged pool is a common cause.

  • Wet ground over the pool

Soggy soil or standing water near the cover can mean wastewater is backing up instead of soaking into the ground.

  • No recent service history

Systems that have gone a long time without maintenance often hold compacted solids that need more than a routine pump-out.

How cesspool cleaning works

Cleaning goes further than a pump-out. The goal is to remove the settled sludge and buildup that block drainage, then confirm the pool can take in water again.

Cleaning vs. pumping

A cesspool is a concrete ring with an open bottom and holes in its sides. Liquid soaks out into the surrounding sand, while solids settle and slowly build up. Pumping removes the waste sitting in the pool. Cleaning goes after what pumping leaves behind: compacted sludge on the bottom, grease and scum stuck to the walls, and buildup that seals the side holes.

Many properties need both at different times. If the pool is simply full, cesspool and septic pumping may be all it needs. If it keeps filling back up, cleaning is usually the next step. Our guide to cesspool cleaning vs. cesspool pumping goes into more detail.

What JET does during a cleaning

  • Locate and open the system. The technician finds the cover and checks the liquid level and the condition of the inlet.
  • Pump out the contents. Liquid and loose solids come out first so the walls and bottom can be seen.
  • Break up and remove buildup. Hardened sludge on the bottom and material caked on the walls is loosened and removed so water can reach the leaching holes and sand again.
  • Check the result. The technician looks at the line coming in from the house and watches how the pool takes water after cleaning.

Afterward you’ll hear what was found and whether anything else, such as a repair or treatment, is worth doing.

Why buildup happens

Every cesspool collects solids over time, but some habits speed it up. Cooking grease, wipes, paper towels and food scraps don’t break down well and add to the layer on the bottom. Heavy water use, such as many loads of laundry in one day, can push solids out of a septic tank and into the pool behind it.

Suffolk County says nearly 70% of its homes use cesspools or septic systems, and plenty of them have gone long stretches without service. The longer the gap, the harder the buildup tends to be.

How often a cesspool needs cleaning

There’s no fixed schedule. Routine pumping is the regular maintenance; cleaning comes in when pumping alone stops keeping up. How soon that happens depends on how many people live in the house, how much water goes down the drains, the size of the pool and how high the groundwater sits around it.

A good rule of thumb: if the pool is filling noticeably faster than it used to between pump-outs, ask about cleaning at the next visit. Our article on how often to clean a cesspool covers the warning signs in more detail.

What affects the cost of a cleaning

Every system is different, so the price is quoted for your property. The main factors are:

  • How much buildup there is. A pool that hasn’t been serviced in years takes more work than one on a regular schedule.
  • Size and number of pools. Larger pools, or a septic tank plus one or more leaching pools, mean more to clean.
  • Access to the cover. A cover buried under lawn, a patio or a driveway has to be found and uncovered first.
  • What the technician finds. If a repair is needed, you’ll hear about it and the cost before any extra work starts.

When cleaning is the right call, and when it isn't

Cleaning helps when buildup is the reason a pool drains poorly. It can’t fix a collapsed ring, a cracked dome or a broken pipe; those need cesspool and septic repair. A pool that has failed completely may need replacing, which in Suffolk County now means a septic tank and leaching system rather than another cesspool. See cesspool and septic installation for how replacement works.

If the technician spots signs of a bigger problem during the cleaning, you’ll be told before any other work is done.

Keeping a cleaned cesspool working

After a cleaning, a few habits help the pool stay open longer:

  • Keep grease, wipes, paper towels and coffee grounds out of drains and toilets.
  • Spread laundry and dishwasher loads across the week.
  • Point gutters and sump discharge away from the cesspool area.
  • Book routine pumping instead of waiting for a backup.

Some owners also add a bacteria treatment or aeration to their maintenance plan. JET can tell you whether either makes sense for your system.

Cesspool cleaning FAQs

Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.

Is cesspool cleaning the same as pumping?

No. Pumping removes the waste in the pool. Cleaning also removes the compacted sludge and wall buildup that pumping can leave behind, which is often what keeps a pool from draining.

How do I know if I need cleaning instead of pumping?

The clearest sign is a pool that fills up again soon after it was pumped. Odors that keep returning and slow drains throughout the house are other common clues.

Can cleaning prevent backups?

It can lower the risk when buildup is the cause. Backups can also come from a clogged line, a broken pipe or a failed pool, so the cause needs to be found first.

Do you clean septic tanks too?

Yes. JET cleans septic tanks and the cesspools or leaching pools connected to them, for both homes and businesses.

Should I try a store-bought product first?

Not for a pool that is already backing up. A product poured down the drain can't remove hardened sludge from the bottom of a cesspool. Call so the cause can be checked.

How often should a cesspool be cleaned?

There's no set interval. Keep up with routine pumping, and consider a cleaning when the pool starts filling up noticeably faster between pump-outs.

How long does a cesspool cleaning take?

It depends on how much buildup there is, the size and number of pools, and how easy the cover is to reach. The technician can give you a better idea once the system is open.

Will you have to dig up my yard?

Only if the cover is buried. JET locates it first and digs only as much as needed to open it, then puts the area back.
