Cesspool and septic installation in Bohemia

New drain pipe junction installed in an excavation

Jet Cesspool Service installs cesspool and septic systems for Bohemia homeowners and businesses. We’re licensed, fully insured, and familiar with Suffolk County’s Article 6 regulations, including the I/A OWTS requirements that apply to new homes and expansions throughout the county. Call 631-260-3640 to schedule your free installation estimate.

Most of Bohemia isn’t on a public sewer, so most homes and businesses here depend on their own onsite wastewater system. We handle the job from soil evaluation and system design through permitting and final inspection, so you don’t have to manage the county process on your own.

Cesspool replacement and septic system installation

We remove a failed or non-compliant cesspool and replace it with a code-compliant septic system. Suffolk County no longer allows a failed cesspool to be replaced with another cesspool installation, so we make sure your replacement meets current Article 6 requirements, handling soil percolation testing, sizing and permits.

A replacement is also the time to deal with the pipe from the house. If the line running back to the house is cracked or deteriorating, we can replace it as part of the same job.

I/A OWTS installation

For new construction and expanded homes in Bohemia, we design and install Innovative/Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems that meet Suffolk County’s nitrogen-reduction requirements. We work with county-approved I/A models and can help you apply for available grant funding to offset installation costs.

Not sure whether your project counts as new construction, an expansion or a straight replacement? Describe it on the call and we’ll explain which Suffolk County requirements apply to your Bohemia lot.

Signs your Bohemia cesspool needs replacing

Pumping and cleaning keep a working system going. These signs suggest the system itself may be at the end of its useful life and should be evaluated for replacement.

  • Backups return after pumping

If the cesspool fills again soon after it was pumped, the surrounding soil may no longer be absorbing water. Pumping only buys time when the walls and bottom are sealed.

  • Collapsed or sinking ground

A depression, sinkhole or cracked cover over the system can mean a ring or dome has given way. Keep people and vehicles off the area and call right away.

  • Wet ground that never dries

Soggy soil or standing water over the system between rainstorms points to wastewater coming up instead of draining down.

  • Odors that keep coming back

A sewage smell in the yard or basement that returns after service is often a sign the system can no longer handle the household's flow.

  • Building or adding on

A new home, an addition or a change in how the property is used can require a new or upgraded system before the work is approved.

What Suffolk County's rules mean for a Bohemia replacement

Two Suffolk County Sanitary Code dates decide what can go in the ground at a Bohemia property. Since July 1, 2019, replacing or retrofitting a system needs Suffolk County Department of Health Services approval, and the new system must have a septic tank ahead of the leaching structure, so a cesspool can’t simply be traded for a new one. Since July 1, 2021, new or expanded single-family homes need an I/A (nitrogen-reducing) system.

In practice, if you’re building new or expanding a house in Bohemia, plan for an I/A system from the start. If an existing cesspool has failed and you aren’t expanding, the minimum is a conventional septic tank and leaching structure. An I/A system is still an option in that case, and it’s the type of system the county and state grant programs fund.

Bohemia's sewer picture and grant help

No part of Bohemia sits inside an active county sewer district, according to Suffolk County’s sewer district maps. About 15% of the hamlet is mapped as a proposed sewer area called “MacArthur Airport/Industrial”, but a proposed area isn’t a connection, and for now the system on your lot is the one that has to work.

Census figures put the typical Bohemia home’s construction date around 1970 (U.S. Census, ACS 2020–2024), so a house still running on the cesspool it was built with may be due for an upgrade conversation. Suffolk County’s Septic Improvement Program offers up to $20,000 per property, and New York State adds up to $25,000, a combined maximum of $45,000 announced in August 2026. Eligibility depends on the property and the approved system, so Bohemia owners should check before signing a contract.

Cesspool & Septic Installation in Bohemia: FAQs

Don't see your question? Call (631) 260-3640.

Can I install a new cesspool in Bohemia?

No. Since July 1, 2019, Suffolk County has required a septic tank ahead of the leaching structure, so a failed Bohemia cesspool can't be swapped for another cesspool.

Do I need an I/A system for my Bohemia home?

If you're building a new single-family home or expanding one, yes: Suffolk County has required I/A (nitrogen-reducing) systems for those projects since July 1, 2021. A straight replacement of a failed system needs at least a septic tank and leaching structure.

Are there grants for cesspool replacement in Bohemia?

Bohemia homeowners may qualify for up to $20,000 from Suffolk County's Septic Improvement Program and up to $25,000 from New York State toward an approved I/A system. Whether a Bohemia property qualifies is up to the county, so confirm it before signing anything.

Is Bohemia going to get sewers?

About 15% of Bohemia is mapped by the county as a proposed MacArthur Airport/Industrial sewer area, but none of the hamlet is in an active sewer district today.
