Signs your Melville septic tank needs pumping
Call if you notice any of these, if the system is overdue, or if more people are using it than usual.
Slow drains all over
When sinks, tubs and toilets all drain slowly at the same time, the system itself is usually the problem, not a single clogged pipe.
Gurgling or backups
Gurgling toilets and water coming back up into a tub or floor drain mean wastewater has nowhere to go.
Sewage odor
A sewage smell in the yard or near the drains often means the cesspool or tank is full.
Wet ground over the system
Soggy soil, standing water or unusually green grass above the cesspool or tank can mean it is overflowing.
No pump-out in years
If you can't remember the last pump-out, or you just bought the house, it's time to have the system checked and emptied.
More people than usual
Guests, a growing family or a rental unit add water the system has to handle, so it fills sooner than it used to.
Sewers around Route 110, cesspools elsewhere
Melville is only partly sewered. Suffolk County’s 2012 draft sewered-area map for the Town of Huntington shows coverage in the Melville area only in pockets around Route 110 (Broadhollow Road): parcels served by Suffolk County Sewer District 3 (Southwest), the Strathmore-Huntington and Walt Whitman Mall districts, and private plants such as those at Melville Mall and The Greens at Half Hollow. Most land in the area shows no sewer coverage on that map.
Voters also turned down a proposed Suffolk County Sewer District No. 26 (Melville-Huntington) at referendum, 815 to 288. Homes outside those sewered pockets rely on cesspools or septic systems, which need regular septic tank pumping. Because the map is a 2012 draft rather than an official boundary map, the surest answer for your own house is whether it is actually connected to a sewer district.
Newer Melville homes still need pump-outs
The typical home in Melville was built around 1983 (U.S. Census, ACS 2020-2024), later than in neighboring Dix Hills (1970) or in Huntington hamlet (1956). A younger house doesn’t mean a maintenance-free system, though: a septic tank or cesspool keeps collecting solids and has to be pumped on a schedule to keep drains moving.
When a Melville system does reach the end of its life, Suffolk County has required at least a septic tank in place of a failed cesspool since July 1, 2019. Eligible owners who install an approved I/A system may qualify for up to $20,000 from Suffolk County’s Septic Improvement Program and up to $25,000 from New York State (up to $45,000 combined, announced August 2026); check eligibility before planning the work.
